NOAA-2 zombie satellite hunting

Noaa-2 aka ITOS-D is a very old decommissioned Satellite launched in 1972. Almost 50 years after launch it was discovered that it was still transmitting a modulated signal!

So I waited for a nice pass, took my helicone antenna and recorded the pass. The satellite transmits at 1697.5 MHz and the signal looks like a wideband version of APT.

For decoding I used a script by Xerbo. I got the following image:

Zooming in on the right you can see synclines like in NOAA APT. The dark areas would have been earth imagery, but those instruments are long off.

Noaa 2 sync lines

You may note that the image is quite short. This is because NOAA-2 transmits in bursts, likely due to the power system being old. It’s about 30 seconds of data and 1-2 minutes of silence.
